Titanium alloy: "corrosion resistance" in marine engineering
Corrosion resistance, strength and lightweight of materials are core requirements in salt mist filled and high-pressure marine environment. Titanium alloy has become the "preferred material" in the field of ocean engineering due to its unique performance. It can be seen from the deep sea to seawater desalination.
Why can titanium alloys be adapted to marine "harsh environments"?
The core advantage of titanium alloys is their chemical stability: in seawater, a dense oxide film (TiO) is quickly formed on the surface of titanium, which can prevent the further erosion of seawater, chloride ions and microbes, and the corrosion resistance is far more than that of traditional materials such as common steel and copper alloys. In addition, it has both high strength (comparable to high strength steel) and low density (only 1/2 of steel), which can not only reduce the weight of the structure, but also bear the high pressure in the deep sea, so as to meet the multiple requirements of ocean engineering for "light, strong and corrosion resistant".
Application of Titanium Alloy in Ocean Engineering
- Deep sea exploration equipment
Critical components such as the pressure-resistant shell and buoyancy material support of manned underwater vehicle and underwater robot shall bear hundreds or even thousands of atmospheric pressure in the deep sea at the same time, and resist long-term seawater immersion. The high strength and low density characteristics of titanium alloy (such as TC4 and Ti-6Al-4V) can not only ensure the structural compression resistance, but also reduce the equipment weight and improve the underwater mobility.
- Offshore Platform and Oil&Gas Development
Risers, jackets, valves, etc. of offshore oil platforms are prone to corrosion fatigue when exposed to salt mist and sea waves for a long time. These components made of titanium alloy can reduce the maintenance of anti-corrosion coating, extend the service life (generally more than 20 years, 3-5 times of ordinary steel) and reduce the operation and maintenance cost of offshore oil and gas development.
- Desalination and Water Treatment
High chloride ion concentration in seawater desalination equipment (such as RO membrane module and heat exchanger) is easy to cause metal corrosion. Titanium alloy has outstanding chloride ion corrosion resistance, which can stably operate in high salt environment and guarantee long-term and efficient operation of equipment.
- Marine energy plant
Blades and transmission shafts of tidal generators and wave energy converters shall be able to withstand seawater scouring and alternating load. Fatigue and erosion resistance of titanium alloy can reduce component loss and improve stability of energy device.
- Summary: Titanium alloy provides "escort" for marine engineering
Titanium alloy, by virtue of seawater corrosion resistance, high strength, light weight and other advantages, solves the pain point of "easy corrosion, large weight and short life" of traditional materials in the marine environment, not only reduces the maintenance cost of marine engineering, but also promotes technical breakthrough in deep-sea exploration, marine resources development and other fields, becoming the "key material support" for the further development of marine engineering.
